Digital Multimeter - In-depth measurement of a device
The ultra modern Digital Multimeter is highly accurate. It is durable and consists of many more features as well than earlier multi meters. When testing with a digital multimeter, the user receives signals as numbers. It converts signals gained from the devices checked to voltages and convertes them to digits through electronic circuits based on pre-arranged software program. For this task, digital multimeter receives support from an inbuilt small computer.
People use Digital Mutimeters to measure voltage, current, resistant, short connections, as well as Transistor hFE values. For example, when there is to measure a potential voltage drop between two points, the two wires of the multimeter should be connected to the two points where the potential voltage drop is evident.
Before applying it, the pointer of the Digital Multimeter should be pointed to V sign. The user could select any value between 0 to 1000V. However the range should not exceed the maximum of its circuit value. Exceeding the value of the circuit may damage the digital multimeter. If the measurement was between 0-20V, the V value should be pointed to 20V. When it is set, the Digital Multimeter can show all the values up to 20V.
Proper maintenance of a digital multimeter is vital to have accurate measurements. In addition, the user should know how to avoid probable self-accidents while handling it. The first time digital multimeter users should read the user manuals of the multi meters that they are going to use. Every manual has sections on safety warnings and special attention should be given to it before using a digital multimeter for the first time.
This type of testing devices should be connected to accurate power supplies and voltage rates to avoid accidental fires, shocks etc. The right voltage etc is given in the user manual. It is imperative to check for broken places, loose leads clips, etc., of the digital multimeter before a testing. It is recommended not to use digital multimeters with split cases, broken leads chips etc. The users must protect their digital multimeter from extreme temperatures, moisture and sunlight. When they are exposed to such conditions, they may get irreparable dysfunctions. When testing power circuits with a digital multimeter, the user should not touch exposed wires, joints and live circuits to avoid fatal accidents.

how do i use this multimeter??
hello all,
i am getting a battery light on the dash, and i want to use this multimeter i purchased from canadian tire.
how do i test my battery and alternator??
please be specific with your answer as electrical is not my field, but i am a bit inclined.
thanks in advance.
Set the multi-meter to read Voltage in DC (Direct Current) Mode. If it needs a range. Find the range that can read 12-14Volts. Some multi-meters are self adjusting.
Place the red lead on the positive terminal and black on the negative terminal. It should read around 12Volts. If it reads less than 10 your battery may be dying/dead.
Now start up the engine.
Place the red lead on the positive terminal and black on the negative terminal. It should read around 14Volts. If it doesn't it means your alternator is not charging the battery.
This only gives you a voltage test. You'll need a battery load tester to determine if the battery is having problems holding charge, but a volt meter will give you at least a preliminary reading.

What is a T stop in the South End near this location?
I was trying to get to Shawmut Ave, Tremont St. or the Starbucks near the two in the South End (Boston)...is there a T stop nearby? Or can someone give me easy to understand directions?
I'm taking the train from my hometown to North Station and then I want to get to the above mentioned area, whichever has a close T stop. I think I can take a bus from the Commons but I don't really know which one to take or where to get off. Or maybe there is a train stop closer to the location?
Thank you to whoever can help me!!
Orange Line to Back Bay Station, go outside and take a left on Dartmouth Street to Tremont. The Starbucks is on Tremont and West Canton. It's about a 5-10 minute walk from Back Bay Station.
You COULD also get the bus that goes down Tremont Street -- the 43 Bus runs from Park Street Station to Ruggles (and back). Orange Line to Ruggles, take the bus. OR Green Line to Park, take the bus. It runs every 20 minutes throughout the day, more at rush hour. But it's a nice walk from Back Bay Station and quicker, too.

A Comprehensive Look At Deciding On A New Texas Electricity Provider
Since we moved into our house a few years ago, we know that each May our contract with our current electricity provider will be up. We have the option of either staying with our current provider or switching. In looking for a new Texas electricity provider and/or plan we not only want a good rate, but we first have to decide if we want a contract and what kind, and if we want to use renewable energy, all the while paying close attention to possible promotions and rewards programs. Here is the process we usually go through.
You must first decide if you want a variable or fixed rate plan. With a fixed rate plan, the rate you pay for electricity will remain the same throughout the term of your contract. The price can change only to reflect actual price changes that are allowed by Public Utility Commission rules due to changes in law or regulatory charges. A fixed rate plan allows you to be certain of your price during your contract period and protects you for the duration of your contract against the possibility of rising energy prices, but if market prices fall you have to wait until your contract is over to switch to a lower rate. If you think you might want to discontinue service after a short period of time, look for a company that does not have contracts or offers short term contracts. Companies that have contract periods often have a minimum term and if you cancel your service before the contract period ends, you might have to pay a penalty. It's also a good idea to find out what happens to your rate at the end of your contract period.
Variable rate, or "month-to-month", plans have no minimum contract period and are based on current energy market conditions. With this kind of plan, the rate you pay can go up or down depending on the changes in the electricity market. This allows you to benefit from lowering energy rates and by switching at the right times, a "month-to-month" plan could really help you to save on your energy bill. However, just as this type of plan would allow you to take advantage of market prices falling, your rate will also increase if market prices rise. For some people, dealing with constant changing electricity rates can be stressful so a fixed rate works best for them. On the other hand, there are others who like being able to always get the best rate and don't mind searching for it, making a variable rate plan their best option.
There are also renewable, or "green", plans. You can check the provider's Electricity Facts Label (EFL) to see if their plan produces electricity from renewable resources such as solar, hydroelectric, landfill gas, biomass, geothermal, or wind. EFLs allow you to easily compare what each company has to offer to find the best fit for your energy consumption and budget. Each label contains the following information:
- Electricity Price: This is made up of the electric company's average price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for 500 kWh, 1000 kWh and 1500 kWh, as well as a possible monthly customer service charge and seasonal pricing. Pricing can differ depending on the number of kilowatt-hours so it's important to look at your past usage. With some companies the more kilowatt-hours you use, the lower the rate will be.
- Contract Terms: Some companies have minimum terms and will charge you an early cancellation fee.
- Power Generation Sources: The provider tells from what resources the electricity is produced (coal, natural gas, renewable energy, etc.) The provider's percentages will be graphed to compare them to the average usage for electricity generation statewide.
- Emissions: In this section companies provide details on the types and percentage of emissions they create per kWh of electricity generated. The provider's percentages will be graphed to show if the emissions are better or worse than the Texas average. This might be an important section for you if you're interested in decreasing your carbon footprint.
So what's the next step? Once you've decided if you want a fixed or variable rate, and if you want a "green" plan, it's time to see what plans are out there. Check out TexasElectricityRatings.com and ChooseEnergy.com to compare prices and ratings. Simply enter your zip code and then pick the kind of plan you want. You will be able to see different electricity providers and their company rating, different plans offered, cancellation fee, if electricity is produced from renewable or non-renewable resources and the terms and rate for each plan. These websites will also show you promotions and incentives offered by each company and if they have a rewards program.
Take a look at the possible incentives and rewards programs offered when selecting an energy provider. Some companies offer rewards programs to their customers such as cash back and gifts. For example, Bounce Energy is currently rewarding its customers for paying their bills on-time. Customers who pay their bill on-time for 6 consecutive months receive their choice of 2 movie tickets or a free companion airfare ticket and also gain access to Bounce Energy's VIP Customer Service line. By paying on-time for 12 consecutive months they receive a $75 bill credit and for 24 consecutive months they get a free month of electricity.
Providers might also offer incentives or promotions for signing up with a new plan such as gift cards, airline miles, charitable donations, or better rates if you sign up online. For example, for signing up for one of their fixed rate plans Bounce Energy has donated $5 to the Red Cross to help Haiti earthquake victims. Another example of an incentive is Bounce Energy's Express Move plan. This short term fixed rate plan makes moving much easier by not only turning on your electricity, but Bounce Energy will also submit your USPS Change of Address form, add your name to the Do Not Mail and Do Not Call lists, give you free identity protection service and give you either a $25 Walmart or Home Depot gift card. Bounce Energy's Terrific 12 plan gives the customer their choice of $25 gift cards to Target, Wal-Mart, GAP Inc., Shell, or a $25 bill credit. They will help you make your home more energy efficient with a performance inspection that will show you how to save energy and save on your utility bills, allow you to make your home's temperature more comfortable, and identify the specific issues affecting your home's energy use and provide solutions.
Another important thing to look at is the forms of payment the provider will accept. Some will only send you electronic bills and auto-draft your account. Others offer free online bill pay, let you pay by mail, in person or over the phone and allow you to use your bank account or credit card. Keep this in mind when you sign up with a provider to make sure the billing and payment options are convenient for you.
There are many electricity providers and plans out there and by doing some research you will be able to find one that is right for your electricity needs and your budget.

How do you relate cost-per-watt to cost-per-kilowatt hour?
I need information on the cost of solar energy over the past couple decades. Most sources give solar energy production in units of dollar per watt ($/W), whereas units of traditional energy cost is usually cents per kilowatt hour (c/kWh). I would like to convert solar energy costs to same units as traditional energy costs for comparison.
dollars per watt is not meaningful as a cost of energy, as watts are a unit of power. (watt-hoiur or kW-hour or joiules are units of energy).
The only way dollars per watt make sense as the cost of building a power plant, such as "Cost of a 5 MW power plane is US$1M, so the cost per watt is $0.2".

Three Things To Know About Using A DC-AC Power Inverter
The first thing you will need to know is what you are planning on running in this time of emergency. The fewer the items or the smaller the amperage, the smaller or least costly inverter will be needed. I will give a simple formula that will give you an idea of the size of inverter you will need.
If the appliance you are planning on using is listed in watts, just go ahead and use that number. If it is listed in amps you just need to use this simple formula: volts (120) X amps (listed on device) = watts. This will give you the amount of watts the appliance will be using. So if you had a 3 amp appliance, and you wanted to find the watts, the formula would be: 120 (volts) X 3 (amps) = 360 watts.
You would then total all of the watts that you will be using and come up with a number. Lets say your total watts usage is 500 watts. If that's the case it would be a good idea to get a 750 watt inverter. Always get a larger size than what you think you will need, it may come in handy.
Your next step will be to determine where your power supply is going to come from. If it is for emergency purposes there is a very good chance that it will be coming from a battery hooked up to your vehicle, or you may be a little better prepared and have a bank of batteries hooked up in a parallel fashion. Since most people reading this are probably unfamiliar with creating a battery bank I will just cover running the inverter from the vehicle. The main thing to know is what type of battery you will be using. It is suggested that you have a deep cycle battery or those that are used for trolling motors or golf carts and that you get as many amp hours as your budget allows. A few years back I was able to go 11 days using a 750w inverter and a 120amp hour deep cycle battery attached to my car. I had to run the car for 10 minutes every 2 hours to run everything that I had hooked up which was a laptop, 13" color tv, direct tv receiver, modem for the laptop, 40w light, and a small box fan. That doesn't sound like much, but I thought I was staying at the Ritz Carlton compared to most of my neighbors.
The last thing you need to know is how long will your power supply (battery) last before it needs recharging. First you will need to know the wattage of all the appliances. Lets say we have 480 total watts of power being used, and we are running our inverter off of a 12 volt battery attached to the car. Next we have to convert this number so that we know how many amps are being used. We do this by taking the watts (480) and dividing it by 12 (volts of the battery) and come up with 40 amps. The formula is: watts / volts = amps. If we have a 120 amp hour battery we would divide 120 (amp hours) by 40 (amps) and get 3 hours before the battery is dead. It is recommended not to drain a battery below 50% of its capacity so you may want to divide the 3 hour in half giving you 1 1/2 hour before starting the car up to recharge the battery.
I hope this helped you determine what you will need in case of an emergency where you will lose power for an extended period.
