Buick Regal MI Owners Enjoy Best Sedan Award; GM Takes Best Rated Hybrid with Chevy Volt Too
Edmunds.com has named the top consumer-rated vehicles for 2011. General Motors took two categories with its Buick Regal MI vehicles and Chevrolet Volt.
DETROIT, M.I. – Buick Regal MI vehicles were rated along with dozens of other vehicles by consumers to determine the ‘Best' of 21 categories for coupes, convertibles, sedans, wagons, SUVs, minivan/vans, trucks and hybrids. Edmunds.com offers a list of winners as determined and rated by consumers.
General Motors owners should be excited to know the 2011 Buick Regal took top scoring in the Best Sedan between $20,000 and $30,000 while the Chevrolet Volt was named Best Hybrid according to top consumer reviews complied by Edmunds.com:
"The Volt has attracted a number of new buyers who have previously owned luxury vehicles or those who hadn't considered a GM vehicle in several years. Owners have previously had a BMW 5 Series and a Mercedes Benz S-Class, and one reader went as far as to say that he enjoyed his Volt better than his Ferrari."
Although the Chevrolet Volt has been shown to be a plug-in hybrid, Edmunds.com does not have a category for that specific type of vehicle, but with the "overwhelmingly positive" feedback, Edmunds.com added the Volt to the hybrid category as the best representation of consumer reviews.
There were very few complaints about the Chevrolet Volt such as not enough rear legroom and the front chin spoiler being too low, but nothing that would affect the overall positive light surrounding the Volt. Some reviews included being thrilled to only fill the tank one or two times a month while enjoying other features such as the "high-tech feel, quiet ride, European-style handling and the relatively seamless transition between electric propulsion and the engine's engagement."
Buick Regal MI owners may also be excited to hear their 2011 Buick Regal models have taken the top spot in its category. One owner told Edmunds.com that "it reminds me a lot of my BMW, but it is cheaper and a lot better equipped, even for the base model."
Most positive reviews included remarks about loving the styling, comfort, quality and quietness of the interior. Most reviewed Buick Regal MI vehicles were purchased with the standard 2.4L inline-4 engine, and most owners were pleased with the performance with one saying "this car delivers good all-around power," adding "you certainly can get a speeding ticket." One of the few complaints was the lack of an interior trunk release.
The other Detroit Three automakers took top spots in the following:
- Large Light-Duty Truck: 2011 Dodge Ram 1500
- Large Heavy-Duty Truck: 2011 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Last year, Ford Motor Corp had topped the list with the most named vehicles, but this year Audi took the most ranked with three vehicles.

Glass Vocabulary: glassmaking techniques and other vocabulary A to Z – Part 1
Air bubbles: these appear particularly on early soda glass vessels and stained glass windows. But today they are sometimes used for decorative purposes.
Abrasion: using wheels to cut shallow decorative areas in glass. Process of using hard particles and stones to cut or mat the surface of glass, or to shape glass objects.
Annealing: process of slowly cooling a completed object in a separate part of the glass furnace or in a separate furnace.
Applied decoration: A form of relief ornamentation, by adding to the vessel's surface glass threads, trails, blobs, prunts, and other motifs.
Art glass: a term used very loosely to describe much of the ornamental glass produced in the latter part of the 19th century.
Baluster: Early English drinking glass, which rests on a stem of baluster (slender above, swelling below) or inverted baluster form, often with knops. Balustroids are lighter and taller.
Batch: Mixture of prepared and measured glassmaking ingredients, used for melting.
Battuto: (Italian: beating) A style of wheel-cutting, in which the surface is cut to produce innumerable small irregular markings running in the same direction.
Blank: A plain-surfeced object, before subsequent adornment.
Bloom: The dulling of the glass surface when it is affected by smoke or fume.
Blowing: The process of introducing air into glass to form hollow ware.
Blowpipe (or blow iron): The length of thin tubing made of hollow iron used by a lampworker for working glass. The thick end is used to gather a blob of molten glass. The other end is used for blowing.
Borosilicate: This type of glass has heat- and shock-resistant properties. It was developed by Schott in Germany and Corning in the USA in the 20th century.
Bottle glass: unrefined glass, naturally dark green or brown, used for 17th century English bottles and early Nailsea domestic wares.
Cameo glass: Glass layered or cased, and the outer layer then removed in part, for designs in relief against a background of contrasting color.
Carrot: Rods of glass, mostly containing twists of various kinds, for forming the stems of goblets.
Casing/cased: Glass made up of different colored layers. These are used for cameo decoration.
Cast: Work which has been produced by forming the glass in a mold.
Cold painting: painting on glass with lacquer or oil based pigments, with no subsequent firing.
Combed decoration: glass threads applied to an object's surface, pulled with a pointed tool to form wavy, zig-zag and other patterns, and marvered flat. This method was used in ancient Egyptian glass.
Cristallo: Venetian soda glass, colorless.
Crizzling: Degeneration of glass, usually due to inaccurate mixing of ingredients. Also called ‘diseased' glass.
Crystal: general term for high quality clear glass. They contain a minimum amount of lead oxide.

Screen Media Expo Europe - Reveals the next generation of digital signage
The fifth Screen Media Europe Expo was held in London at the beginning of May where many of Europe's leading digital signage companies were displaying their latest innovations and products.
There were some really exciting ideas on display at the Earls Court exhibition which saw 3195 people visit the show over the two days, an increase of eight percent on the previous year.
Nearly a hundred exhibitors were showing off their latest digital signage products and there were a couple of show stoppers that really drew the crowds and provided a glimpse of the future possibilities of digital signage.
3D Television
Following the resurgence of 3D films with movies such as Avatar, Up and Beowolf, 3D has become a buzzword in both TV and digital signage.
Whilst asking viewers of a digital display to wear dual coloured glasses is not really feasible one company at Screen Media was demonstrating a glasses free 3D TV system that has oodles of potential in the digital signage universe.
Based on stereoscopic principles, this new approach to 3D is strictly speaking an optical illusion but the results are quite astonishing with content spilling out of the screen which is really engaging and eye-catching – perfect for digital signage.
Intelligent Digital Posters
Another breathtaking piece of technology was the digital posters that can actually recognise specifics about the audience. Not only can these smart digital signage posters work out how large the audience is by measuring footfalls but also they can distinguish between a male and female viewer which has incredible potential for advertisers who can tailor content specifically for the audience.
This system is still in it's infancy but the potential is over whelming. The system works thanks to a small camera and computer software that records and analysis the audience.
Outdoor Digital Signage
There were several outdoor digital signage producers displaying their IP65 and NEMA 4 enclosures that are waterproof and ruggedized for outdoor locations. Amongst them were the cost effective LCD enclosures which are becoming increasingly popular for those seeking an outdoor digital signage solution.

"Sex and Science" would you rather mate with a robot(3D) or a digital bot (cyber space)?
At the cutting edge of “Sex and Science”
The big question mark sits
“Will we mate with “Robots”?
Or will it be in “Virtual Realities”?
It is a race of technologies
A chase of dichotomies
Which would you prefer?
The mirror of “Virtual Here”
Or the sheer touch of fabricated skin
Name your sin, what’s your pleasure
The selling of sex (financial treasure)
Believe in the cause, they’ll be no laws
To restrict the humans from receiving their “Awes”
Artificial Intelligent is the Art of Intelligence
Born
Will it be worn with our similar flesh?
Or the staking a cyber space in digital-ness
Hi...Gumby!
Won't have the heartaches and headaches,
Not even to get the aids, If I join a robot honeymoon on a holiday.
I'll just make sure that I won't also get the back ache!
Or I'll just read some good fairy tales and myths with gratifying endings.
Leaves quite a happily ever after satisfaction...
Those are my true passions..Oh Gumby, I am a cyber bot in the kingdom of hearts!
I need not the skin, cause I'm *aurtomatic*..hehe.
Btw, 'brilliant poetic question Mr. Genius Gum'bot.

Electric Cars - are you plugged in yet?
Government support for electric cars is quite considerable and includes a €5,000 incentive and VRT exemption. The running costs are also considerably lower. ESB (Electric Supply Board) have estimated that running an electric car costs 3 cents per mile, which compares to 15 cent per mile for a standard car. However, the initial cost of purchase is still a major obstacle. There must be clear incentives set out which will benefit the electric over the standard car driver such as use of bus lanes, priority parking etc.
It is still early days and many challenges lie ahead but the ESB, along with the Government and manufacturers have set up ambitious plans, which they believe are achievable. The government aims to have 2,000 eletcric cars on the road by the end of 2011 abd 6,000 by the end of 2012. The aim is to have 10 per cent of the fleet electric by 2020, about 250,000 cars.
One of the major arguments against early rollout of the electric cars is the ability to have full infrastructure and systems in place before these cars go on sale to the public. Last December, ESB installed the first on-street charging points in Dublin. Today there are four in the country. By next year, they aim is to install 2,000 home charging units (free of charge), 1,500 public charge posts and 30 fast charge posts by 2011. These 'fast chargers' will be located along major urban roads, 60km apart and nine will be up and running by the end of this year.
It is expected that the majority of drivers will use home charging which will allow the car owner to charge his/her car 100% over a 6-8 hour period. It is estimated that the cost of this will be in the region of €2-€3. Destination Charging is set to achieve an 80% charge in 1-1.5 hours and en-route charging, similar to filling up at a petrol station can charge the battery in 20 minutes.
The technology is certainly in its early stages but, undoubtedly, using Irish companies to develop these technologies will benefit Ireland in the future, enabling us to sell this knowledge on to other countries. Challenges such as how much to charge your car if you live in an apartment, or if you don't have on-street parking are obvious issues.
We don't know yet how motorists will be billed for the use of the chargers, I would expect a system similar to a mobile phone top-up will be used on conjunction with other methods. All of this technology is in the testing phase.
