Hardwire the power source for a garmin nuvi to my 2005 Nissan Xterra?
I want to have a permanent power source hardwired behind the dash so that I can have my Garmin Nuvi GPS always plugged in. I believe that I need to a fuse box somewhere and get a chord that can go from the fuse box to the GPS. I think that I should use a littelfuse add-a-ciruit but don't know how to go from that to my GPS. I also would want to power source to turn off when the car is turned off. I have a 2005 Nissan Xterra. Thanks for any help!
Check the fuse box under the driver side kick panel and locate the "ACC" fuse. The location should be shown on the inside cover to the box.
You'll need to identify the positive wire in your Nuvi power adapter cable. First mark one of the wires 2-3" from the connector. Use a dab of Duplicolor, whiteout, fingernail polish, or something similar. Put 2 marks separated by a couple of inches. Cut the plug off BETWEEN the marks. Strip the wires on the plug end and, using a multimeter, identify the wire that corresponds to the CENTER of the adapter plug. If that's the marked wire, then connect the end coming from the Nuvi to the 12V+ from your add-a-circuit. The other wire can be grounded anywhere you can find bare metal, perhaps a dash screw.
Purchase a "fuse tap" similar to this one. They're available at some auto parts stores, and sometimes even Radio Shack.

Remove the "ACC" fuse, slide the tap over one leg and reinsert the fuse.
Crimp the other end of your add-a-circuit to the insulated spade connector that is part of the fuse tap kit. Slide the connector onto the tapped fuse.
